Example Personal Network Diagnostic

Over the past decade, research has focused on helping executives improve their own effectiveness through better connectivity as well as drive organizational performance by replicating networks of high performers throughout their employee base. Using either our printable version of the personal network report or our on-line dynamic personal network site, people can rapidly assess their network on dimensions associated with high performers.

Insights from the Network Diagnostic
The on-line diagnostic provides unique insights into each person’s connectivity based on four dimensions of high performer’s networks:

  • Network Structure
High performers fight off insularity in their network and have more bridging ties that help them hear about and rapidly take advantage of opportunities.
  • Relationship Distribution
High performers have more ties across boundaries of an organization (ties outside their unit; ties outside their organization, ties up and laterally in the hierarchy, etc.) that help them to obtain resources, support and the best expertise for their initiatives.
  • Overlay of Networks on Expertise Needed for a Current or Future Role
High performers use their networks to extend their expertise and learn new skills and do not overly-circulate with people who know the same things that they do (validating interactions that do not improve individual effectiveness).
  • Networking Behaviors of High Performers
High performers often differentiate themselves through specific behaviors that better help them build, maintain and leverage effective (rather than just big) networks.

Process for Completing Diagnostic
The diagnostic is typically a 10 minute on-line assessment customized for an event or program.

Output from Diagnostic
The diagnostic allows people to assess their effectiveness on dimensions associated with high performers as well as compare themselves against peer groups they care about (e.g., those at the same hierarchical level, functional role or high performers). Respondents can access results either through a hardcopy document or an online, dynamic and confidential Web site. The online version enables participants to craft a detailed and customized action plan to improve their own performance.
